Type “mastermind” into any web browser and you will be inundated with examples of how these small focus groups are changing the face of business and personal development.  Entrepreneurs across numerous industries are singing the praises of how mastermind groups are fast tracking their success.  The more I have learned about their format and development the more I have come to realize that independent dental hygiene masterminds are the obvious solution to the lone wolf phenomena we as independent practitioners often face.

Accountability

One of the reasons we love this alternate practice lifestyle is exactly the independence that this career path brings.  Therein lies the crux; we no longer have bosses or dentists to be accountable to. In a mastermind group sharing goals with others creates a group dynamic that will propel us along paths we desire but find difficult to commit to on our own.  Of course this will only work if we value being people of our word who want to walk our talk.  If that is the case then simply voicing your goal to someone else can provide that extra push to follow through.  We don’t usually worry as much about letting ourselves down as much as we do others.

Encouragement

People with entrepreneurial hearts are often comfortable working alone.  Lord knows, I am not one for “group” projects like we had to do in school.  A significant part of the course work I did for my dental hygiene degree completion was in fact, group based.

Therein lies the crux; we no longer have bosses or dentists to be accountable to.

I felt frustrated waiting for others to complete their assigned tasks which was often done different than I would have done given the same responsibility or I didn’t entirely agree with the direction or decisions made by the majority.  Worse yet, in some situations, you couldn’t always count on everyone in the group being equally motivated which created a whole other host of issues.  Yes, I know this is sounding a lot like I don’t play nice in the sandbox and certainly I like to be in control – hence my own clinic – but when push came to shove and the crunch was on at the end of a term and assignments were due and stress was high, I enjoyed the camaraderie between group members who really had each others’ backs. During the first few years of my clinic, this was something I really missed.  While researching the importance of accountability for business success I came across the idea that typically, it is not when all is well in our world that we need others around us.  In such times perhaps, our own approval is enough for us.  It is actually when we struggle, when things get tough that we need encouragement, support and perhaps a new perspective to keep us going.  Looking back,  it would have been nice to have some comrades encouraging me when I worried if I was going to be able to cover my monthly loan payment.  How uplifting it would have been to hear another independent hygienist share his or her struggles and eventual triumphs.  Yes, I had great support from my family and especially my father who has always been my entrepreneurial inspiration.  This is different though.  Having encouragement from others on our same professional path is the missing piece of an otherwise great way to practice dental hygiene.

Inspiration

This leads me directly to the third reason you should consider joining a mastermind group.  The moving force behind the success of others has an inertia that can break through barriers in personal and practice development.  Consider why weight loss programs are chalk full of testimonials.  Seeing others accomplish what we envision for ourselves makes us realize that the goal is attainable.  When you are part of a group of like minded independent hygienists who also value business and professional development you will find yourself among the movers and shakers.  We are a new breed of hygienist, we are risk takers and have dared to work outside the box.

Better yet if they themselves have made their way through that proverbial trail themselves and can caution you to avoid the bear den and fallen trees.

There is currently no such thing as a “turn key, cookie cutter” dental hygiene practice.  Despite the uniqueness of each new practice that opens its doors, there remains a consistent theme.  A hygienist had a dream and that dream became his or her reality.  Their truth can become our truth.

Outside Feedback

Bringing practitioners from all parts of the continent together into small mastermind groups of 5 creates intimacy and fosters trust. Each owner/operator hygienist comes to the group with different experience and input that can’t help but give participants a new set of eyes into their own situations.  Sometimes we are so caught up in the forest we are navigating that we lose sight of the path.  The trees around us start to all look the same and we can get overwhelmed and lost.  How great to have someone apart from the situation, up in a helicopter, radio down to us how to get through to the clearing ahead. Better yet if they themselves have made a way through that proverbial trail themselves and can caution you to avoid the bear’s den and fallen trees.  Yes, I am sure we all have support networks of personal friends and family but the feedback from these sources may not be removed enough to see as clear as those up in the helicopter.
